LEGO enters Hundred Acre Wood with latest Ideas launch, LEGO Winnie the Pooh

The LEGO Group is taking a nostalgic walk through Hundred Acre Wood with the launch of its latest LEGO Ideas project, LEGO Winnie the Pooh, a set based on the original designs from LEGO builder Ben Adler.

Taking inspiration from the tales of A.A. Milne’s adventures of Christopher Robin that have transported readers for almost a century, the new LEGO Winnie the Pooh launch will take fans on a journey to beneath a large oak tree, where Pooh’s house takes centre stage.

The house can be opened up to unveil a host of furniture and unique items such as the Pooh-coo Clock, a box of Pooh sticks, Tigger’s locket, and plenty of honey pots.

LEGO superfan Ben Alder originally submitted the concept to LEGO Ideas; a LEGO initiative that takes new ideas that have been imagined and voted for by fans and turns them into reality.

Discussing the design, Alder said: “I love Winnie the Pooh and remember my parents reading it to me as a child. I now read the same Winnie the Pooh stories to my children, so it is certainly something dear to my heart. I decided to make the set so that my children could bring to life our bedtime stories but never quite expected the positive reaction it has received.”

The new set includes five new moulded characters, each with their own accessories. Pooh himself has his red balloon to collect honey from the bees in the branches above, Piglet is wrapped up in his scarf, and Tigger has just moved to the woods with his sack on a stick. Meanwhile, Rabbit has carrots ready for snacking, and Eeyore comes complete with his tail and a removable ribbon.

Other notable inclusions to the set include a campfire and log for Pooh to think about the things that he discovers, his front door complete with “Mr. Sanders” sign above it, his adorable blue bell to ring the front door, and finally, a signpost to the Hundred Acre Wood to make sure Pooh finds his way home.

Federico Begher, VP of global marketing at The LEGO Group, said: “Winnie the Pooh is a 95-year-old story that is loved globally, so seeing Ben’s design sparked a lot of nostalgia for us all.  Plus, his personal story about how he created the set for his family to play out the lovely Winnie the Pooh stories using LEGO bricks felt like a beautiful combination of family, LEGO bricks, and Winnie the Pooh that we wanted to share with others.

“We also had the rare treat of being able to create all new characters for this LEGO Ideas set. We simply had to see how the line-up of Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit and Piglet would look like in mini figure shape. As well as creating a brand-new Eeyore figure.

“The stories of the Hundred Acre Wood come to life with this set and there are plenty of intricate details for fans of both Disney and LEGO to discover.”

The LEGO Ideas Winnie the Pooh set is available directly from LEGO Stores and LEGO.com from 18th March, 2021 for LEGO VIP members, and 1st April 2021 for all.

Schleich launches its first video game Horse Club Adventures with Wild River Games

The Munich games developer, Wild River Games has partnered with the international toy company Schleich to launch the first video game title for its popular Horse Club franchise.

The new title, Horse Club Adventures, will be an open-world game for children aged six to 12, allowing them to explore and roam freely across the terrain, while also engaging with the mystery-solving adventure narrative.

Horse Club Adventures is scheduled for release this May, blending adventure, role-playing, and racing elements as players take on the role of holiday makers on vacation at Lakeside Riding Stable, joining the Horse Club clique Hannah, Sarah, Sofia, and Lisa. Together they reveal long-guarded secrets, complete quests, and collect objects such as photos and stickers.

The appearance of the player avatars and their horses can be individually customized with clothing for new game characters that will be made available in physical toy retailers from July 2021.

The single-player game can be played in either the storyline or freestyle mode. The storyline mode is split up into 16 days and has over 40 quests ready and waiting to be completed. They range from getting acquainted with Lakeside to being accepted into the Horse Club clique, all the way to participating in the big Lakeside Tournament.

In the freestyle game mode the player explores the extensive terrain on their own. Optional sidequests enable kids to immerse themselves deeper in the story and, among other activities, attend to daily chores such as grooming horses and scraping hooves, or galloping on one of the numerous race courses while competing with others for high scores and medals.

“Figures from Schleich have stood for quality and educationally worthwhile playing for more than 85 years. The video game from Wild River Games equally orients itself in alignment with these values,” read a statement from the team.

“The highly diversified virtual world including numerous different quests still has surprises in store, even after playing repeated games. This ensures long-lasting gaming fun for children in a variety of age groups and with different levels of experience.

“What arises due to the symbiosis of video game and the original Schleich figures is a balance comprised of a digital and tactile game.”

Horse Club Adventures will be available across Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, as well as a digital download for Xbox One and PC.

EOLO Toys and Panini on board for new animated series and app game SuperMasked

EOLO Toys and Panini have been named among a portfolio of licensing partners already on board to launch exclusive toys and collectables based on an upcoming animated series and app game, SuperMasked.

A joint venture between Maya Studio and EOLO’s own toy design house and motion graphics centre, Toy Zone, SuperMasked is an animated superhero saga that teaches kids that they don’t need to be perfect to be a hero. The animated comedy will become the focus of its own app game this autumn.

Multiple licensing partners have already been tapped for the new IP, including Panini and EOLO Toys who will each launch ‘very unique and exclusive lines’ in the coming months.

“Our main mission is to make everyone happy and keep smiling even through difficult times,” said EOLO’s Toy Zone director of fun, Alex Prieto. “We love this property, its values and of course it’s going to be lots of fun. [It has been] great to work with Maya on this, they are very talented and know how to enjoy the process, this will for sure be reflected in the end result.”

Maya Studio has made a name for itself in the entertainment and licensing space through the success of its Catrinas Underworld brand, a playful adaptation of the Mexican skulls art and style. The brand has enjoyed vast success in licensing with products spanning books and bags to collectable dolls, costumes and more.

Maya’s creative director, Javi Monler, added: “The toy world is something that fascinates us. Seeing that the things you have created move and serve to entertain is the greatest thing a creative could dream of.

“Catrinas is the brand that has shown us the way, and while establishing itself with top products in the market, we present SuperMasked, a new property that will not leave anyone indifferent.”

Mattel reveals new Barbie partnership with Radio One broadcaster Clara Amfo

Mattel has unveiled a new one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in the likeness of the popular broadcaster, Clara Amfo as part of the toy maker’s ongoing UK Barbie Role Model campaign.

Best known for hosting her Radio One show, Amfo has interviewed some of the world’s most prolific artists, from Jay-Z to Ariana Grande. She also hosts her own successful podcast, This City, in which famous friends tell their stories about London life.

On top of this, Amfo has also hosted coverage for Glastonbury Festival, The BRIT Awards, and the BAFTAs, as well as documentaries like Running with Grief in 2016, in which Amfo explored the impact of losing a parent.

Partnering with Amfo this year, Barbie will be encouraging girls to ‘raise their voice’ with a call to women and girls on why it is important to stand up for yourself and your beliefs, how to build confidence, and how young girls can be empowered to believe in their potential.

In summer last year, amid the shockwaves felt around the death of George Floyd, Amfo made a powerful on-air speech with a call to action for anti-racism that went viral. She became widely recognised as a powerful force for change across UK media, joining 15 other activists on the cover of the September issue of British Vogue.

Amfo said: “I have been lucky enough to experience some really special moments in my professional life and to say that I am honoured to be named a Barbie Role Model would be an understatement.

“There is so much power in being able to see yourself reflected positively in the world as an adult and it’s even more potent as a child. That power and the confidence that comes with it should only be protected and amplified.

“For me, having this doll represents the infinite possibility that I believe we all have a right to and my only wish it that it will do the same for anyone who sees her.”

Honouring female role models is one of the ways the Barbie brand is working to close the Dream Gap; the time when girls start to doubt that they can be anything. The Barbie Dream Gap Project is an ongoing global initiative that aims to give girls the resources and support they need to continue to believe in themselves.

One of the ways that Amfo and Barbie will be working together is in partnership with grassroots London project Milk Honey Bees and its mission to celebrate black girlhood by creating an expressive, safe space that allows young Black women and girls to flourish through one-to-one sessions and creative group projects.

Barbie will also be making a donation to Milk Honeybees to support a creative writing community project, launch a series of social videos spotlighting Milk Honey Bees and Amfo, to celebrate girlhood, and sponsor Milk Honey Bee’s first appearance at the Women of the World Festival on 13th March.

Meanwhile, Barbie will continue to highlight role models from around the world timed to International Women’s Day. The doll brand has so far highlighted the boundary-breaking stories of more than 60 historical and modern-day role models from diverse backgrounds and fields to help inspire the next generation to believe they can be anything.

In the UK, previous Sheroes include Dina Asher-Smith, Fastest Woman in British History, 2020. Sky Brown, Champion Skateboarder, 2020. Adwoa Aboah, Activist & Model, 2019. Nicola Adams, Boxer, 2018.

Global Sheroes include US Olympian Fencer Ibtihaj Muhammed, Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, Gymnast Gabby Douglas, Model and Body Activist Ashley Graham and Actress Zendaya.

New My Little Pony, Transformers, and Magic: The Gathering content among Hasbro’s mass roll-out announcements

It was a flurry of major new announcements across each of its sectors that Hasbro issued throughout its first all virtual investor event this week, including new film and TV content for its biggest franchises including My Little Pony, Transformers, and Magic: The Gathering.

In an address opened by Hasbro’s chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, the entertainment powerhouse kicked off proceedings by detailing new financial reporting segments: Consumer Products, Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming, and Entertainment.

“We have simplified our structure to maximise our growth and provide a clearer view to the drivers of Hasbro revenues, profit, margin, and cash generation,” said Goldner during the event.

“Our expectation is that we return to growth in revenues, earnings, and EBITDA in 2021. This includes revenue growth in all three segments to potentially achieve double-digit revenue growth across Hasbro for the year.”

The Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment will include all revenue associated with the Wizards of the Coast tabletop and digital games, including Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, as well as licensed Hasbro digital gaming across the portfolio.

Entertainment spans all revenue associated with Hasbro and eOne entertainment across Family Brands, TV and Film, and music.

The announcement came with an extensive roll-out of new announcements across each of the segments, that included the detailing of new animated and live-action TV and film releases across some of Hasbro’s most iconic entertainment franchises, including My Little Pony, Transformers, Peppa Pig, Magic: The Gathering, and Dungeons and Dragons.

Consumer Products

Hasbro was quick to project a growth of the consumer products revenue above the industry growth rate, fuelled by an increase in its ecommerce business which it expects to make up for 50 per cent of all consumer products business by 2025.

In its direct to consumer channels, Hasbro is to launch Hasbro Pulse to the UK, with additional markets to follow, while it has also detailed a partnership with Amazon on its PlaySkool brand with a new focus on learning and sustainability for pre-school audiences.

The firm is extending its partnership with Epic Games to continue a licensed roster of products for its Nerf and Games Fotnite collaborations, while expanding the IP into action figures and role play this year and beyond.

Hasbro also detailed three new Monopoly launches in Monopoly Builder, Monopoly Crooked Cash, and the community-based Monopoly campaign launching on March 19.

The company is also eyeing new innovation in the gaming space, aligning itself with voice technology to integrate Alexa into its gaming offering with The Wanted Bounty Hunters board game, a titles that gives players an in-game connection to Alexa and the cinematic world of The Mandalorian.

The toy maker will also be supporting its robust theatrical and streaming calendar of content this year with ranges spanning GI Joe, Ghostbusters, Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Princess new releases.

Completing the bill, and in partnership with Merlin Entertainment, Hasbro will be welcoming the opening of the first Peppa Pig theme park in LEGOLAND Florida next year.

Wizards of the Coast

A segment now spanning its hobby and digital gaming audiences, Wizards of the Coast is, according to the firm, ‘approximately halfway to achieving its target of doubling revenue from 2018 to 2023.’

2020 Wizards of the Coast revenue was $816 million, with Magic: The Gathering revenue up 23 per cent and Dungeons and Dragons revenue up 33 per cent for the year.

Alongside new digital game launches for both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, the unit has detailed new crossover products within the collectables and social play space with partners Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop, and Middle Earth Enterprises, to include characters from The Lord of the Rings universe.

Entertainment

Finally, within its Entertainment segment, Hasbro currently has more than 200 projects underway across TV and film.

Franchise plans include those with Transformers which has a panned feature film for 2022, a new animated feature film in developments, a third instalment of Transformers: War for Cybertron on Netflix, a new 20-episdoe animated comedy series on Netflix called Transformers: BotBots, and a new original animated Transformer series with Nickelodeon.

Meanwhile, Magic: The Gathering currently has a feature film in development at Fox, as well as a premium animated series in production with Netflix, while Dungeons and Dragons has partnered with Paramount Pictures for its own feature film, and a number of television projects are in the works.

With My Little Pony, a CGI film will debut on Netflix this year, alongside a new computer animated series.

Gaming, events, and retro-appeal: Scalextric talks its brand new horizons through licensing

Anyone paying any level of attention to the general narrative of the toy industry over the course of the past 12 months will know that there’s been a re-awakening among some of the market’s more traditional sectors.

The hobby community is one among them. As consumers have found themselves with more time on their hands and a greater tendency to lean back into the pastimes and brands of yesteryear, it comes as little surprise that the hobbyist sector has undergone a resurgence.

The pandemic, for all of its ills, has played a helping hand in driving those dormant hobbies out of the shadows and into the limelight. Gaming – whether it is tabletop or role-playing – has never been so popular, with Hasbro citing record years for both its Magic: The Gathering and Dugeons & Dragons franchises, while the more traditional pursuits – and we’re looking at model building and the hobby trains segment here – have too ploughed full steam ahead into a wider-spanning, more mainstream audience.

As a result, Hornby Hobbies, a name synonymous with the hobbyist market, has reported some of its best results in years. It’s in fact the success of sales of Hornby Hobbies products over the past two years that have given the outfit a new lease of life, and a new grasp on the contemporary market. Consumers have rediscovered the joys of slowing down, and in turn, things at Horby Hobbies have been, well, speeding up.

Hornby Hobbies’ licensing consultant, Michele Pearce

Earlier this month, the company announced a definitive return to the licensing sector with the appointment of licensing consultant, Michele Pearce, who has taken on the role of leading a new charge of licensing opportunities for the company’s popular Scalextric brand.

Talking with Licensing.biz, Pearce has confirmed that the programme will commence with a few of the more pertinent categories, spanning luxury goods such as watches, video games, board games, sportswear, sports equipment, footwear, and apparel. While it may be early days for the programme still, the message is a big one; after a period of softer sales not some five years ago, Horby Hobbies is ready for growth, and licensing is a very viable route towards it.

“Hornby has dipped its toe into licensing in the past, but this has not been the focus for some years due to changes in the company and a need to really focus on the core product ranges,” Pearce told Licensing.biz.

“However, with the success of the sales of Hornby products over the last two years, the company is now in a great position to expand its options. This is also the perfect time to connect with the customers with other consumer products.

“There is a strong nostalgia response trending amongst all consumers right now as well as a focus on known and trusted brands, and Scalextric is definitely a good fit on all points.”

A traditional slot-car racing system with more than 60 years of rich history behind it, Scalextric is keen on bridging the gap between the surge in demand for nostalgia, with the necessity to contemporise for modern day audiences. It’s by no accident that Pearce talks about Scalextric in the same breath as Mattel’s Hot Wheels, or Hasbro’s Monopoly; each pedigree brands with the vision to remain contemporary and span audiences.

“Scalextric has both the fun and excitement of a dynamic speed-driven toy and the gravitas of being a retro brand,” says Pearce. “This is not something many toy brands can share as an accolade, and the few that do are already partnering successfully with licensees.

“Scalextric has a wealth of imagery in its archive relating to box artwork, catalogues, and old logs and slogans which can be utilised in bringing an extra zing and classic look to a range of adult product.

“Then the new style guide offers a bright and dynamic range of colours, logos, and the digital tie in with the Scalextric Performance App that will appeal to the younger audience.”

Racing into the future

While the potential for the Scalextric brand within the consumer products space lies before it like an expanding horizon, Pearce has already earmarked her markets for initial exploration, and amng them, of course, is digital gaming.

“With the Scalextric App already developed and the ability to play via your mobile phone or tablet to control your cars and then share scores and discuss via social media means that this is a natural extension for the brand,” she explains.

Then, there’s the scope for audience engagement that live eventing – when the world opens itself back up to in-person events of course – has to offer.

“Once the opportunity is available again to participate in the public space, we will be looking for partnerships with stores and other types of events that could host Scalextric events,” Pearce added.

Reading the signs offered to the Scalextric brand over the past 12 months, engagement with the slot-car racing brand is expected to remain high. House-bound consumers have rekindled their love and affinity with a brand to a degree that it has welcomed families back into the field, while Hornby Hobbies has been active in engaging new fans through its social media platforms.

“All of these actions have either reawakened past fans or brought the brand to the attention of new enthusiasts who have discovered the fun and excitement that is Scalextric. We now want to build out the partnerships over the next six months and have a positive story to tell at the Brand Licensing Show in late November,” Pearce continues.

“Over the last three years or so, Hornby has invested heavily into the Scalextric brand, with new scales, new sets, new features, and new licensed characters. The team has reinvigorated the brand with such innovations as SparkPlug, but there is still plenty to come.

“Scalextric is a 60 year old brand with an eye to the future with both product, brand awareness, and vision,” she concludes.
