US retail giant Authentic Brands makes plans for Debenhams and Arcadia Group takeover

The US retail giant, Authentic Brands, has divulged plans for a double takeover of the collapsed department store chain Debenhams and Topshop-owner Arcadia Group.

According to a report from The Sunday Telegraph, Authentic Brands, the owner of the New York department store brand, Barneys, has been in talks with the administrators and was lining up bids for both companies.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that the firm, which was founded by Canadian Jamie Salter in 2010, was lining up bids for both brands.

Authentic Brands comes with the backing of heavyweight financiers such as Blackrock and Leonard Green & Partners. Prior to the pandemic, it was on course to book turnover of $15bn. Throughout the crisis, founder Jamie Salter has seized the opportunity offered to buy up a number of struggling brands, including Forever 21 and Brooks Brothers.

Both Debenhams and Arcadia Group are to offer comment on the latest update.

Last week, Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group said it was in negotiations to buy Debenhams from administrators in a rescue deal. It was also interested in participating in the sale of Philip Green’s collapsed Arcadia Group.

Frasers, formerly Sports Direct, said that it hoped a deal could be agreed and jobs at Debenhams saved after the Covid-19 pandemic sunk its business, but cautioned that the transaction was complicated and talks needed to take place quickly.

Administrators for Debenhams said earlier in December it would be wound-down, closing all its shops after 242 years in business and putting 12,000 jobs at risk. Green’s Arcadia fashion group collapsed into administration late in November putting more than 13,000 jobs at risk.

Following consultation with many of our customers, we have decided to carry forward the successful elements of these virtual events and learnings from them to run alongside our in-person events in 2021 and beyond.

“Multi-platform events are definitely the future, and the combination of live and online offers no limits to global participation.”

Maura regan, president, Licensing International, Global Licensing Group event sponsor, added: “I know I’m not alone in eagerly anticipating the moment when we can all gather again in person, and this revised timeframe and hybrid solution for our industry’s two flagship gatherings will offer the best chance for that to happen soon and safely.

“While we certainly learned this year that nothing can replace actual face-to-face interaction, the unique value of virtual events is their global accessibility. This plan for the 2021 iterations of Licensing Expo and BLE will allow us to have the best of both worlds.”

Bing-le bells: Pre-school IP lands major Italian toy retail presence this Christmas shopping season

Acamar Films’ flagship pre-school property, Bing, is to be a big presence across Italy this Christmas, thanks to the implementation of a marketing strategy throughout the region’s largest toy and retail stores, spearheaded by the Italian licensing agent, Maurizio Distefano.

Bing will also have a significant branded area at Toys Con Te, starting at the retailer’s newly opened location in Rome Tiburtina. Bing will then roll out across the retailer’s best-performing locations.

On top of this, and through a collaboration with Bing’s master toy partner Giochi Preziosi, 157 Bing-branded bay areas have been created for Italy’s main mass-market retailers, including Carrefour, Finipier, Conad, Bennet, and Mondadori.

As Bing’s presence continues to grow in stores, the hit pre-school show’s e-commerce footprint is also expanding. Toys Center and Acamar Films recently collaborated on a dedicated Bing shop-in-shop on the Toys Center website. Various Bing products are now available to purchase via a direct link on Toys Center’s home page.

Disney invests heavily into streaming as it details new Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar content slate

UK Disney fans could be forgiven for thinking it was Christmas morning as they woke up to the news that the entertainment studio had detailed a raft of some 35 new television series, including ten from Marvel, ten based in the Star Wars universe, new Pixar animations, as well as 15 new movies to be released on Disney Plus in the next few years.

It was possibly the spoonful of sugar needed to help the digestion of the concurrent update that over in the US, the Disney streaming service was to up its prices, while forecasting that the platform will attract between 230m and 260m subscribers by 2024. The surge will, no doubt, be fuelled by the latest scheduling of releases.

Amid the announcement, Lucasfilm confirmed that multiple new Star Wars shows are coming to Disney Plus, including two spin-offs of its The Mandalorian series with Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic and Star Wars: Ahsoka, with Rosario Dawson – who having just appeared in The Mandalorian in the role of Ahsoka Tano – taking on the lead role.

The biggest news to emerge from the Star Wars universe, however, is that Darth Vader is returning. Hayden Christensen will be reprising his role, alongside Ewan McGregor for the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone series. Production on the series is set to start in March 2021, and will be set after the events of Revenge of The Sith, meaning that Christensen will be playing the role of Darth Vader, rather than that of Anakin Skywalker.

Disney also confirmed a standalone show based on Lando Calrissian, as well as Star wars Visions, a series of short films from Japanese anime creators. Meanwhile, The Acolyte will be a ‘mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era’, while A Droid Story ‘will introduce us to a new hero guided by R2D2 and C3PO’

On top of that, two new Star Wars films will be on the way, with Taika Waititi and Patti Jenkins attached to each.

Yet, despite the barrage of announcements to come from the studio, not forgetting the further 10 series from the Marvel franchise, the slate of Pixar films, and 15 movies to be released on Disney Plus, the firm still warns that the unit would lose money until 2024, underscoring, some have commented on the punishing economics of online entertainment.

The Financial Times reports that Disney plans to double its annual content investment to about $15bn by 2024, at which point its streaming business will turn a profit, the company predicted.
