SpongeBob SquarePants celebrates widespread consumer products success

Published on: 17th June 2024

The SpongeBob SquarePants brand has developed to encompass a wide range of consumer products, with more new launches and expanded offerings to come.

SpongeBob SquarePants was created by Stephen Hillenburg, who previously worked as a writer, director and creative director on Nickelodeon’s animated series Rocko’s Modern Life. After completing his undergraduate at Humboldt University in 1984 and starting work as a marine science educator at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, Calif, he first illustrated the sponge in an educational comic book, The Intertidal Zone. Here, the character featured as a round sea sponge with sunglasses and was named Bob the Sponge.

Following Stephen’s completion of a masters’ degree in experimental animation at California Institute of Art and inception as creative director on Rocko’s Modern Life, he was able to develop his comic book The Intertidal Zone, into an animation which was then pitched to and approved by Nickelodeon. The show then previewed as SpongeBob SquarePants after the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on May 1, 1999, ahead of the series debut in July that year.

The widespread success of SpongeBob SquarePants consumer products comes from a series of successful partnerships across numerous categories, including apparel, beauty, plush, toys & collectibles and food and beverage, all of which incorporate SpongeBob’s unique brand DNA.

Last year, Paramount Consumer Products, Nickelodeon and Lush launched a SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration tied to SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Sea Change, a global ocean conservation and sustainability initiative. The partnership included an exclusive SpongeBob-themed box of plastic-free goodies based on fan-favourites Patrick Star and Gary the Snail along with Bikini Bottom.

Other sustainable initiatives include the SpongeBob SquarePants and EcoEgg partnership, whereby the eco-friendly laundry solution company produced a range of SpongeBob-themed reusable laundry egg detergent pellets.

In the apparel category, Paramount Consumer Products and Nickelodeon have orchestrated trend-led SpongeBob SquarePants fashion collaborations with Beatrix Ong, Nike, Vans and Puma From a food and beverage standpoint, Iceland introduced SpongeBob SquarePants Potato Shapes into their stores nationwide last year.

For SpongeBob SquarePants’ 25th anniversary, Paramount Consumer Products, Nickelodeon and their licensees are launching a variety of exciting new products. In April, BoxLunch, fandom-forward retailer, launched a 38-piece apparel and accessories collection which is now available online internationally. This collection is spread over several categories, including key chains, earrings, crewnecks, tees, caps and bags, each tapping into iconic scenes and characters from the series.

The fan-focused accessory company, Loungefly, has also released an exclusive 25th anniversary accessory collection, which entails a SpongeBob Mini Backpack, Zip Around Wallet, Convertible Backpack and Tote Bag, and a Krusty Krab-inspired Crossbody Bag.

The remainder of 2024 will see new launches and expanded offerings across fashion, collectibles, plush, beauty and more.

This month, The Entertainer will introduce two limited-edition exclusive SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star Fugglers online and in select stores nationwide. These Fugglers have taken on a disguise as these much-loved Nickelodeon characters and they are full-time tricksters – so beware!

Additionally, Sambro will be unveiling seven product lines across key UK and EU retailers later this summer, such as B&M, AS Watson, Very and Forbidden Planet. These lines will include Puzzle Palz™ collectable 3D erasers, Squelchums™ novelty toys, 8cm and 30cm collectable plush characters (including a 25-year celebration plush), Paint your Own characters and Pop Up game.

Funko will also be joining the 25th anniversary celebrations with seven new SpongeBob SquarePants 25th anniversary Funko Pop! Figures launching this summer. Also available, are five new collectable Funko Plushies of SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Gary.
