New Barbie trailer drops as excitement builds for movie

Published on: 5th April 2023

Set to open in July this year, the movie has unveiled a star studded cast and multiple iterations of both Barbie and Ken.

Various senior Mattel and Warner Bros. personnel have shared the new teaser trailer on LinkedIn and social media, with the strapline ‘Welcome to Barbie Land!’ The release of the latest trailer has been accompanied by a series of 24 posters, highlighting the star studded cast of the movie, which has gained extensive media coverage.

Mattel president and chief operating officer Richard Dickson said: “As we draw closer to the summer of Barbie, here’s another glimpse into her sensational world as interpreted by the one and only Greta Gerwig who has brought her to life for the first time on the big screen. July can’t get here soon enough!”

From the moment at the start of the trailer when Barbie steps out of her high heeled, fluffy mules – and her feet remain rigidly in position – the level of detail that has gone into the movie is obvious, as well as its tongue in cheek tone.

Margot Robbie starts as Barbie along with Ryan Gosling as Ken, however they are not the only Barbie and Ken dolls in the film, with other high profile names appearing as different iterations of the famous dolls. Many are introduced in the trailer, as they each call “Hi, Barbie!” to camera.

The first Barbie trailer, featuring a nod to Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, didn’t reveal much about the characters or plot but there are now a few more hints to the content of the hotly anticipated movie; it has been revealed that Barbie has been expelled from “Barbie Land” for being a less-than-perfect doll and turned up in the real world with Ken, where the duo must meet the many challenges real life presents.

The cast also includes Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya and Jamie Demetriou, as well as additional Barbies and Kens, including Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Simu Liu, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa.

Barbie is a co-production by Mattel Films, Heyday Films and Margot Robbie and husband Tom Ackerley’s LuckyChap Entertainment. Josey McNamara from LuckyChap and Ynon Kreiz from Mattel serve as executive producers. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

In an interview with Licensing.biz, Richard Dickson commented: “For sure, this movie is going to create another level of conversation about Barbie. It will be a huge tentpole moment for Mattel and Barbie, and will drive enormous sales of Barbie licensed merchandise.”

Jon Spalding, Mattel head Of Consumer Products UK & HL EMEA, also told Toy World that he believes the Barbie movie will be the pop-culture moment of 2023.

Barbie is set to premiere on July 21st, and to get everyone in the mood, a poster generator has been created, which team Licensing.biz has had great fun with, and you can access here.
