The striking trailer introduces Margot Robbie as Barbie in her classic strapless black-and-white swimsuit and matching sunglasses.

The movie, set to open in cinemas in July 2023, is a satirical take on the iconic fashion doll, directed by Greta Gerwig and based on a script she wrote with Noah Baumbach. The teaser trailer gives away little about the plot of the movie but shows the overall look and feel, which is fun and colourful. Empire magazine said: “Even in these handful of shots, Gerwig’s vision of life in plastic is looking fantastic.”

The cast also includes Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Rhea Perlman and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

In a recent interview with Licensing.biz, Richard Dickson, president and COO of Mattel, commented: “For sure, this movie is going to create another level of conversation about Barbie. It will be a huge tentpole moment for Mattel and Barbie, and will drive enormous sales of Barbie licensed merchandise”

Jon Spalding, Mattel head Of Consumer Products UK & HL EMEA, also told Toy World that he believes the Barbie movie will be the pop-culture moment of 2023.
