CPLG strikes up the band for Andrew Lloyd Webber portfolio

CPLG has been named the worldwide licensing agent for a raft of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s award-winning musicals – The Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Starlight Express.

The deal has been forged between CPLG and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Really Useful Group, which, wholly owned by Webber, produces, licenses and promotes the musical maestro’s shows and numbers around the world.

CPLG will now develop a cross-category licensing programme including apparel, dress-up, gifting, paper and stationery as well as homewares all celebrating the themes of the hit musicals, as well as their logos.

The Phantom of the Opera will be among the titles to enjoy representation. It is one of the longest running musicals in Broadway history and tells the love story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the Catacombs of the Paris Opera House. It first opened in October 1986 in London and is now in its 33rd year.

The show has been seen by more than 145 million people worldwide across 30 countries, and has received more than 70 major theatre awards.

Meanwhile, Cats premiered to the world in 1981 and has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. This year will see the theatrical release of the hit musical on December 20th when Universal Pictures and Working Title release the big-screen adaptation of Cats.

Both recently made their first foray in to the world of fashion when The Really USeful Group detailed a collaboration with the US streetwear brand, The Hundreds.

Finally, in April 1991, Starlight Express became the second-longest running musical in London theatre history. The show has been produced all over the world from the USA to Japan and Australia.
