Global toy company Just Play has announced a master toy licensing agreement for Afro Unicorn, a brand developed by its founder and CEO, April Showers.

Just Play has the worldwide rights to manufacture and distribute products inspired by Afro Unicorn including, but not limited to, dolls, figures, play sets, collectibles, role-play, plush, activities, novelties, construction and collaborations with Just Play-owned Shrinky Dinks. The products will launch at major retailers by spring 2024.

The brand, which also includes apparel, accessories and party supplies, is meant to inspire and remind girls that they are unique, divine and magical. Afro Unicorn and Just Play are aligned in their vision to uplift, inspire and to advocate for women of colour to achieve greatness.

“I am excited to partner with Just Play to bring Afro Unicorn to life for children of colour and diverse backgrounds,” said April. “Just Play’s experience in bringing diverse and inclusive products to the toy aisle makes it the perfect partner for Afro Unicorn. I knew Just Play was the right partner when I turned over an Ada Twist, Scientist toy and saw the Just Play logo on the back. The company’s history of building inclusive brands aligns with my passion and mission to elevate black stories and inspire future generations to dream big.”

Sunny Lauridsen, senior vice president of Brand Strategy and Licensing at Just Play, commented: “April is a dynamic creator with passion, energy and hustle. At our first meeting, we knew we had to be a part of April’s vision. It is a privilege to be her partner on Afro Unicorn and to bring these beautiful characters to life in toys.”
