Disney and Pixar’s Incredibles 2 sets records as biggest ever launch for animated film

Disney and Pixar’s Incredibles 2 has flown to a record-smashing $180 million box office opening in the US – the biggest ever launch for an animated film.

The sequel to the 2004 adventures has trounced the previous holder of the title – Pixar’s Finding Dory ($135 million) – and has also become the eighth biggest opening of all time.

Incredibles 2 also surpassed Beauty and the Beast ($174.6 million) to boast the biggest bow in history for a PG-rated titles. Overseas, it debuted to $51.5 million from its first 25 markets for a global launch of $231.5 million.

More than 31 per cent of all ticket buyers in the US were adults without children.

“The movie played to everybody. You definitely don’t get to this level without reaching across all segments of the audience, including adults and teens,” said Disney distribution chief, Cathleen Taff. “Our evenings were stronger than with most animated films.”

The sequel is the 20 movie from the animation studio and establishes a new franchise for Pixar and Disney.

It opened in the wake of Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story which failed to ignite moviegoers in the same way. Solo finished the weekend on $339.5 million.
